Clinical Interests
My main interest has been in head and neck cancer, particularly the management of oral cancer. This has involved both the excisional aspects and reconstruction particularly the role of microvascular surgery and free tissue transfer. Other areas of clinical interest include skin malignancy, particularly cutaneous melanoma and oculoplastic surgery, particularly the management of ptosis.
Research Interests
Main research interests have concerned head and neck cancer, particularly objective assessment of speech rehabilitation in patients undergoing treatment for oral cancer, the role of viruses in recurrent and locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, sentinel node biopsy in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node mapping in the head and neck and gene mutations in oral cancer.
Presentations and Publications
I enjoy an international reputation in plastic surgery and head and neck surgical oncology and microsurgery and have delivered over fifty prestigious lectures at meetings outside the United Kingdom. I have won a number of prizes and awards for publications and presentations including the John Baron Prize, the Mentor Prize, the British Journal of Plastic Surgery Prize, and the Mowlem Award. I have been the editor and author of two books on microvascular surgery and two books on head and neck cancer, author of over thirty chapters in textbooks and over eighty articles in peer reviewed journals.
