Professor Julian J. Pribaz MD FRCS (Ed) FRACS FACS

 

 

Julian J. Pribaz, MD was born in Trieste, Italy but was raised and educated in Australia.  His undergraduate medical degrees were from the University of Melbourne and St. Vincent’s Hospital Medical School, graduating in 1972.

   He then trained in General Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and completed this training in Salisbury, England where he was a General Surgery Registrar and obtained his FRCS from Edinburgh University in 1978.

   He then returned to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne where he did his Plastic Surgical Training with Richard Newing, Bernard O’Brien, Wayne Morrison and Allan Macleod.  After completing this he came to the United States, via Pisa, Italy where he spend several months working with Paolo Santoni-Rugiu.   He then spent 2 years in the United States, where he did a second residency in Plastic Surgery at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois with Elvin Zook, Robert Russell, Lew Kinkead and Allen van Beek.

   He subsequently returned to Australia where he became a Clinical Instructor in Plastic Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital at Melbourne University.  He developed a very busy clinical practice and also worked with the many international research fellows who rotated through the unit.

   He obtained his FRACS in Plastic Surgery in 1982, and in 1986 went on to complete his American Boards in Plastic Surgery. 

  After 5 years as a consultant at St. Vincent’s Hospital, he was recruited to Harvard Medical School by Elof Eriksson, to become part of their faculty.  He began his faculty experience at Harvard in 1987 as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery.

In 1989 he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Surgery and in 1994 to Associate Professor of Surgery.

  In 1997 he was appointed Program Director of the then new Combined Harvard Plastic Surgery Residency Training Program which he still runs and which is the largest training program in the United States.  In 2002 he was promoted to full Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. 

  Dr. Pribaz has been the author of 73 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, 29 book chapters and 54 other reviews, discussions and publications.  He has served on the editorial board of 4 major plastic surgery journals. 

  Dr. Pribaz has been a visiting professor at over 40 national/ international institutions.  He is a member of numerous national/ international surgical and plastic surgical societies.  Dr. Pribaz research interests are primarily in the area of microvascular surgery and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, breast, as well as, extremity reconstruction.

He has been course director and invited lecturer at many institutions, and has given over 400 presentations nationally/ internationally.

  Dr. Pribaz and his wife, Judy, have 5 children and 1 grandchild and they reside in Boston, Massachusetts.
