Professor John W. Polley, M.D.

 

 

Professor John W. Polley graduated in medicine from the Northwestern University Medical School Chicago, Illinois in 1983. He did his general surgery residency at Michigan State University/Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan (Dick Dean, M.D., Director) and plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center, Michigan State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan (John Beernick, M.D. Director). His postgraduate training included fellowships in craniomaxillofacial surgery July 1988-June 1989. Dr. Samual Noordhoff, Director, Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, and Dr. Yu Ray Chen, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China, pediatric Craniomaxillofacial surgery July 1989-January 1990.  Dr. Jeffrey Posnick, Director, Craniofacial Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and aesthetic and breast reconstruction January 1990-June 1990.  Dr. G. Patrick Maxwell, Director and Dr. Jack Fisher, The Institute for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Nashville, Tennessee. Since 1999 he is Professor and Chairman, Dept. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Rush University Medical Center, holding the John A. Curtin Chair.

He is a member of several professional societies including the International Society of Craniofacial Surgeons (ISCS), American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS), Midwestern Association of Plastic Surgeons (MAPS), Chicago Society of Plastic Surgery (CSPS), American Cleft Palate- Craniofacial Association (ACPA), Plastic Surgery Research Council (PSRC), American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS), Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), Chicago Committee on Trauma, Illinois State Medical Society, Chicago Medical Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. Dr. Polley has received numerous distinguished awards including:

1.     Phi Beta Kappa – Northwestern University-1997.

3.     First Prize, Resident Competition, (The Role of Alloplasts in Orbital Reconstruction). Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center Research Day, May 1987.

He is a recipient of many research grants on craniofacial surgery including distraction osteogenesis and craniorbital surgery. He has served as an Officer and Committee Member in many professional organizations, and serves as a Section Editor in The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, and member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and The Journal of Facial and Somato Prosthetics. He has published more than 100 papers and 120 published abstracts in peer reviewed national and international Journals, and he is the co-author of one book and 10 book chapters. He has delivered 40 teaching courses, 11 scientific exhibits and has presented more than 220 oral abstracts in national and international professional scientific meetings in USA and abroad.
