Ferit Demirkan, MD

 

Dr. Demirkan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and Chairman, Department of Medical Education at the University of Mersin, School of Medicine, Turkey. After graduating from Hacettepe University Medical School, in 1988, he completed his residency training at Gazi University, Ankara, in 1997. During his residency, he spent two years at the University of Utah, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as a fellow at the Microsurgery Research Unit. His research was in the area of allograft composite tissue transplantation and microcirculation. Dr. Demirkan completed a one-year clinical fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1998. He, then moved to Mersin, to establish the Department of Plastic Surgery, in 2000. He is an EBOPRAS fellow, and also certified in the Turkish Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Demirkan’s academic interest is in reconstructive microsurgery and aesthetic surgery. His specifically focuses on head and neck, breast reconstruction and toe transfers. In aesthetic surgery he works in the fields of breast surgery and rhinoplasty. He is also interested in medical education and transfer of the knowledge in this field into residency training programs and microsurgical skill training. He is in a task group of the European Federation of Societies for Reconstructive Microsurgery, that aims to develop standards in microsurgical training across the Europe. Dr. Demirkan is an executive board member of The Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, General Secretary of The Turkish Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and an executive member of the Turkish Plastic Surgery Board. He is a founder member of The World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery and International College of Oral Oncology. Dr. Demirkan published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to several book chapters, and edited an atlas of microsurgery.
